Facts and Events
[edit] NotesSamuel Gold was born on 8 March 1868 in Russia, which is stated on Samuel's Declaration of Intention for Naturalization in 1907 (shown below). On that Declaration, Samuel states that his last foreign residence was "Gabn." Russia, likely an abbreviation for the town of Gabnavolok [needs further research]. Gabnavolok is a village in Kareliya, Russia that is located near Lake Onega. It is 453 miles (730km) north of Moscow and 208 miles (335km) south west of Severodvinsk, and about 138 miles from the border between the Republic of Karelia (formed in 1991) and present-day Finland. This area has been the subject of several "border disputes" between Russia and Finland since 1721, when it was lost to Russia by the Treaty of Nysta. Though Finland is not currently pursuing any measures to reclaim Karelian lands ceded to Russia, the "Karelian Question" is still a topic present in Finnish politics. It is known that Samuel Gold emigrated to the United States on a ship that originated from Hamburg, Germany and arrived at the Port of New York on or about the 15th day of September 1886, according to Samuel's "Declaration of Intention for Naturalization" filed in Los Angeles County, California on 22 January 1907. Samuel's occupation is listed as being a "Merchant" and his physical description is "dark complexion, height 5' 7", with brown hair and brown eyes" on the same document. Census records in 1910 show him as a "Pawn Broker", with his wife Gertrude 'Kate' Rosenblum and their three children Henry, Leslie, Pauline and a single 19-year old female, Ruth Mae Cooper, who is assumed to be a domestic helper. In the 1920 Census, Samuel Gold's occupation is listed as "Retail Merchant, Women's Apparel". Both of Samuel's parents were listed as being born in Russia/Poland, speaking Hebrew, according to the same 1920 Census record. Samuel Gold's Store/Pawn Shop is said to have been located on the corner of 2nd & Main Street in Los Angeles. He died in the early 1930's near Los Angeles according to family members. His wife Kate married 2nd, Moses Tannenbaum, after Samuel's death. Samuel Gold supposedly (according to some of Samuel's descendants) had a brother, Abraham Gold that also migrated to New York within a few years of Samuel and later lived, ran a small country store and died in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, but there are significant differences between the area that Abraham supposedly came from in Odessa Russia, and the area that Samuel may have come from (Gabnavolok), which are situated widely apart. ( [edit] Emmigration to AmericaSamuel Gold's Declaration of Intention for Naturalization, filed in Los Angeles County, California on 22 January 1907, indicates that Samuel arrived in New York on or about the 15th day of September, 1886 from Hamburg, Germany. Included in the List of Immigrant Ships arriving at the Port of New York is the ship Hammonia that arrived on the 25th of September, 1886 from Hamburg and Havre, France that may be a likely candidate for Samuel Gold's journey; however, Samuel Gold's name does not seem to appear on the ship's manifest transcription. More research may be necessary in this regard.
[edit] Marriage to Gertrude 'Kate' RosenblumU.S. Census records in 1910 show that Samuel Gold had married Gertrude 'Kate' Rosenblum prior to the birth of their first child, Henry Samuel Gold, who was born on 4 November 1895 in Colorado. A likely (but not proven) marriage record for a Samuel Gold has been located in 1894 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, Marriage Certificate No. 2440 was issued to Samuel Gold (See Family History Library catalog for films 1543971-1562446 (Manhattan) and Film 1653852 (Brooklyn), for actual certificate), but the name of his bride is apparently not listed on the record. Since Samuel Gold had emigrated to New York a few years before this record, it could be the marriage record for this Samuel Gold, but needs additional research before being considered proven. [edit] American CitizenshipSamuel Gold is listed on the U.S. Naturalization Index as emigrating from Russia. The date listed of 22 January 1907 coincides with the date of Samuel Gold's Declaration of Intention for Naturalization, shown below. The record is located in volume 90, page 778, according to the Naturalization Index. In Samuel Gold's Declaration of Intention for Naturalization he "renounced forever all allegience and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, and particularly to Nicholas 2nd, Emperor of Russia".
