In 1815 Samuel Spates was born on a farm in Swinneytown (later to become North Middleton, Kentucky) in Bourbon County near Paris. In his youth he was deeply affected by several experiences. At age seven he severely injured his foot with an ax - resulting in a life long limp. When he was about nine he was profoundly impressed by the death of an older brother and by his mother's subsequent fervent pursuit of religion which led to the maintenance of an alter in their home for the next six years.

      He was fifteen when his family moved to Illinois, arriving in October,  1830 - just in time for one of the worst winters in Illinois history ("The Year of the Great Snow")  which resulted in the death of his younger sister (Catherine).
     Grief-stricken by her death, Samuel sought religion at nearby camp meetings.  A few years later (1837) he enrolled in the newly established Ebenezer Manual Training School at Jacksonville to become a Methodist missionary. He then served as a missionary to the Ojibway Indians in Minnesota (largely at Sandy Lake) from 1840 to 1855 - longer than any other missionary in that era.  With his wife, Sarah (married in 1846 at Mt Sterling, Illinois), he struggled to maintain the Sandy Lake mission.  They fed the Indians as best they could during the terrible famine and diseases afflicting them in  1851.   Despite their efforts  some of the Indians grew more hostile during the next few years, probably aggravated by the many deaths caused by the government's delivery of contaminated  flour to the Indians
      In 1855 a number of the Indians broke into the mission, threatened Samuel's family ,  tried to poison one of his children, and struck Samuel.  After Sarah convinced the Indians to leave, Samuel gathered his family into a canoe and abandoned the mission, paddling rapidly to Belle Prairie (near Little Falls).  Subsequently he moved his family to Red Wing, Minnesota, where the Methodist Conference assigned him to various appointments in the Red Wing circuit.
     Samuel lived the rest of his life on his farm in Burnside township.  He died there  on April 19, 1887, suffering from cancer of the stomach.  A few days before his death, in answer to a question from his brother, Charles, as to his feelings, he replied, "Gloriously happy."  He was conscious up to within ten minutes of his death and the last word that he whispered was "Hallelujah!"
