The will of Peter Hoggins, (Abstracts of Wills, Montgomery Co, MD by Mary Gordon Malloy et. al. ) probated 1798 mentions a granddaughter, Mary Eleanor Hoggins ( probably Mary Ellen.) ......
The will of John Hoggins , written 19 Sept 1802 and probated 29 March 1805 (Abstracts of Wills, Montgomery County, MD by M. Malloy et. al) names daughters "Ellender" (probably Mary Ellen). and Kitty; sons - John, William, and Benjamin; and wife - Tamer. However Tamer is not the mother of Mary Ellen because Samuel Spates (1815-1887) in his diary recalls how his mother (Mary Ellen) told him how her own mother died when she was just a child .......
Mary Ellen's father, John Hoggins appears on the 1776 census of Montgomery County, Maryland at age 20 in the household of Mary Ellen's grandfather (Peter Hoggins - age 50) on the 1776 Maryland Census in Prince Georges County The household includes Elizabeth Hoggin - age 84 (probably Peter's mother); wife - Catherine Hoggin - age 46; nine children ages 3 - 20 - John - 20, Richard - 16, Peter - 12, William - 10, Solomon 8, Elizabeth - 15, Rebecca - 6, and Catherine -3; and five Negroe children, apparently slaves - Tom - 12, David - 3, Phillis - 11, Rose - 3, & Charity - 1..........
The diary of Samuel Spates (1815-1887) in the "Samuel Spates Papers" at the Minnesota State Historical Society, relates a story of the journey by his parents, Samuel Spates (1777 - 1853) and Mary Ellen (Hoggins) Spates, and their children from Maryland to Kentucky. The diary also describes Mary Ellen as fervently religious, profoundly influencing her family
