    "My grandfather, Robert Spates, was born in Yorkshire in Great Britain. He moved to America when a young man and settled in Maryland where he married I know not who and had several children. My father, Samuel Spates, I think, ws the youngest. When he arrived at the age of 28 years, he married the daughter of Mr. --- Hoggins, and when they had 2 children, they removed to Kentucky and settled in Bourbon County."
