Facts and Events
[edit] Personal HistorySamuel Peacock, second son of William Peacock and Sarah (Edsall), was born 8 April 1691, in Roxbury, in the colony of Massachusetts Bay.[1][2] He died intestate[4] 22 February 1737/8, in Tewksbury, Province of Massachusetts Bay.[3] Samuel Peacock and Mary Kittredg were married 5 February 1718/9, in Billerica, Province of Massachusetts Bay, by Rev. Samuel Ruggles. The births of their children appear in the town records of Billerica. On 15 May 1738,[4] in the probate court of Middlesex Co., Mary Peacock (her + mark), widow, and Daniel Kittredg, husbandman, were appointed administrators of the estate of Samuel Peacock late of Tewksbury, and they, along with Edmond Frost, husbandman, and William Kittredg, inholder, all of Tewksbury, signed a bond in the amount of £1000. Joseph Kittredg, Nathan Shed, and William Kittredg took an inventory of the estate on 24 June 1738; the personal estate was valued at £203-10-3, and the real estate of about 112 acres was valued at £600. Five persons were appointed on 19 May 1742 to take a new inventory for the widow's dower, and on 15 June 1742, the real estate, including the home lot of about 54 acres and additional lots of about 60 acres, were valued at £758 (with her third being £253). Other lands owned outside the county were not appraised at this time. His widow was granted about 28 acres, the use of the lower room in the dwelling house, one third of the cellar, and the east end of the barn. The committee also recommended, “The whole two thirds of the land … in our judgement will not make more than one settlement and accordingly is settled on the eldest son now living namely William Peacock. Consented to by the children and guardians, [signed] William Peacock, Joseph Kittredge, William Kittredg, Mary Peacock.” William, the eldest surviving son, was required to pay the legacies of £167-10-⅓ to the heirs of his brother Samuel Peacock, deceased, and £83-15-⅔ each to his brothers Daniel and Thomas and his sister Mary. On 20 November 1749, at the initiation of probate of Samuel Peacock's son, William, the same five persons who were previously appointed to inventory the widow's dower were appointed to inventory the remainder of the estate and distribute to the heirs of William Peacock, deceased, and his brother Thomas. The land was valued at £1000. On 1 January 1771, three person were appointed to inventory the widow's dower and distribute it to Samuel's grandchildren. On 7 January 1771, the real estate of about 15 acres was valued at £31-14-8. Samuel's descendants were delineated, “Saml. Peacock left 4 sons & 1 daughter, his sons William & Thomas left children, viz., William left William & Betty (Scarlet), Thomas left Hannah & Mary.” William Peacock, husbandman, the only son of Samuel's son William, was granted the land, and he was required to pay the legacy of £5-16-17/10 to each of the other three grandchildren of Samuel.
