Known as Elder Samuel Hovey, he moved in 1765 from Windham, CT to Canterbury, CT, and in 1773 to Weare, NH. He later moved to Lyme, NH, on 60-acre Grant's Island in the Connecticut River, where he kept a canoe fastened to the house or barn since the island was submerged at high water. He was a soldier in the Revolution, and moved in 1791 to Norwich, VT, and then in 1794 to East Brookfield, VT, where he stayed. His gravestone reads "Elder Samuel Hovey, Preacher of the Gospel, died May 12, 1833, aged 90 years and 2 mo."
