The family of Samuel Gill at Deer Creek, Pickaway Co., Ohio in the same time frame. Taking into consideration the way families often named their children after parents, grandparents, and siblings, this other family may be significant. Note the similar children's names in Deer Creek Twp., Pickaway Co., OH in the 1850 Census: Samuel Gill md. Elizabeth Jane LUKENS on 23 Apr 1837 in Pickaway Co., Ohio. She died in 1855 (Find A Grave Memorial# 53681434). On 2 Dec 1856, Samuel Gill married Harriet MITTEN Harriman in Pickaway Co., OH. 1860 Census, Deer Creek, Pickaway, Ohio 1870 Census, Middle Fork, Ringgold, Iowa This Samuel Gill was the Administrator of John Gill's estate in 1838 in Pickaway Co. I found newspaper clippings of quite a tale about the sons of Samuel in Missouri/Iowa (The Holt County Sentinel, March 28 and December 5, 1873). They became livestock brokers. Would contract to take cattle and hogs to Chicago to sell them. The father would be in Chicago to meet the shipments (I assume via train) and make the sale, then send the money to Levi and John so that the ranchers could be paid. They did this for several years, and suddenly embezzled the money sent to them by their father, and disappeared. They were found in California, and arrested. But they continued living in California (for the 1880 census and beyond). 1880 Census, Kaweah and Mineral King, Tulare, California 1880 Census Kaweah and Mineral King, Tulare, California 1880 Census, Kaweah and Mineral King, Tulare, California |
