SAMUEL STRAUGHAN5 DOBYNS (WASHINGTON4, SAMUEL3, CHARLES2, DANIELI) (from ¶333) was born about 1815 in Richmond Co. Va., as indicated by the 1850 Census of Northumberland Co. Va. where his age was given as 35. By Northumberland Co. marriage bond dated 31 Jan 1840 he married (1st) FANNY S. RICE, ward of WILLIAM H. BRANSON. On 10 June 1853 he married (2nd) ALICE A. PEARSON, daughter of NANCY ANDERSON PEARSON.SAMUEL S. DOBYNS was owner and captain of a schooner plying the waters of the Chesapeake Bay and the West Index. During the Civil War he ran the Union blockade for the Confederacy. In 1864 his vessel, loaded with freight, was moored at his landing on the Coan River when he received word that Union gunboats were coming up the river. He burned the vessel to keep it from Union hands. After an engagement in which the Union troops [Begin original page 100] from the gunboats were forced into retreat, they burned the home of SAMUEL S.
