Will of "Samuel Allen of the Town of Bridgewater ... being weak in body", dated 1 Sep 1736, proved 6 Aug 1750, names wife Jean Allen; Grandson Samuel Allen and Granddaughter Abigail Waldow; Three daughters Mehetabel Bushnel Mary Kingman and Rebekah Kingman; six Sons Ephraim Allen Timothy Allen Joseph Allen Benjamian [sic] Allen Matthew Allen and Seth Allen. Sons Timothy and Seth to be executors.
Vol. 12, p. 473 28 Aug 1750: "Apprisement of the Estate of Samuel Allen Late of Bridgwater Dec't": £558=2=10, by Ebenezer Alden , Jonathan Ross, Thomas Whitmon.
Vol. 12, p. 530 6 Nov 1752: Account of Seth Allen of Bridgewater [executor] of Saml Allen his Father deceased, allowed. Legacies paid include "Henry Kingman, John Kingman 3d, Mehitable Kingman, Shubal Waldo ["Paid Brother Tim'o Allen for a Journey to Shubal Waldo to pay him his Legacie"], "Seth Kingman in full of his Legacy", "Sam'l Allen towards his Legacie", "Mehitable Bushnell in full of her Legacye".
Vol. 11, p. 473 23 Oct 1750: Division of real Estate of Samuel Allen late of Bridgwater: to Matthew Allen, to Joseph Allen, do Deacon Seth Allen, to Timothy Allen, to the heirs of Benjamin Allen, to Ephraim Allen.
- On p. 92, Source:Mitchell, Nahum. History of the Early Settlement of Bridgewater, in Plymouth County, Massachusetts says (in abstract) that Samuel Allen, s/o Samuel Allen and Sarah Partridge, b. 1660, m. (1) 1685 Rebeckah, d/o John Cary, m. (2) 1700 Mary ["perhaps" d/o Joseph Alden]. It adds, "There was a Samuel Allen who m. Jane Turner, of Weymouth, 1728, and d. 1750, and called Jr., probably the son".
The identification of his second wife as Mary Alden was done with no apparent evidence. Mary Pratt is a much more likely identification, as discussed on Family:Samuel Allen and Mary Pratt (1).
Weymouth VRS, p. 2:12, do show the marriage of a Samuel Allen to Jane Turner: "Allen, Samuel of Bridgwator [int. Bridgwater], and Mrs. Jane Turner, June 12, 1728". And the will of Samuel Allen in 1736 names wife Jean and most of the children attributed to this Samuel Allen. One child who isn't mentioned is a son Samuel. As the will was proved 6 Aug 1750, it is probable that the death record found in the Bridgewater VRs, p. 2:429: "Allen, Samuel Jr., h. Mary, June 28, 1750" belongs to the father. Certainly, he wasn't known as Samuel Jr. at the age of 90, but a later researcher might think of him that way. Certainly, his wife wasn't Mary, but such seems to have been the limit of Nahum Mitchell's knowledge. So there is reason to suspect that the death record may have been inserted, or embellished, after the fact. What that basis for the specified date is, is unknown, perhaps church records of East Bridgewater (which Mitchell obviously worked with as PR5 of East Bridgewater VRs is "copy made by Judge Nahum Mitchell of the records of the First Church of East Bridgewater")?
