Facts and Events
Ruth Holiday’s origins have yet to be established. The age given when she died suggests that she was born around 1754. Her first confirmed sighting is on 27th October 1777, when she married a labourer called Edward Jordan at Horley in Surrey. One of the witnesses to their marriage was a Richard Holiday, who was presumable a relative of Ruth’s. Between 1778 and 1797 Ruth and Edward had nine children at Horley. Ruth’s eldest daughter, Lucy, married in 1804. Ruth’s first known grandchild was born in 1809. In September 1805 Ruth’s daughter Susannah married, but then died just two months after her marriage, aged twenty. Ruth died in 1817, being buried at Horley on 21st March. She was said to be 62 years old. She and Edward had been married for 39 years. Ruth’s burial record notes that her last abode was at Horley Common, which was on the southern edge of the parish of Horley. Edward survived her by fifteen years. References
