Godmother to Rose Mary Katherine Keller Hughes. She was a beautiful woman whose hair turned white at a very young age. She had a sad love affair in her 20s--vowed to never marry. She was an avid crocheter and supplied our family with many, many crocheted slippers--known as the "Aunt Rose Slippers." She spent her last years caring for her sister Katherine--her mid-life caring for her sister Elizabeth. She also was the caregiver for her brother-in-law, Max Graff. She had a need to serve others. She also had a zest for living.

In the California Death Records site on the Internet, her birth year is listed as 1905. Did she tell stories about her age? Also, her mother's maiden name was listed as Bartolf. Very perplexing because that is her stepmother's maiden name and there was always rancor in the family between Rose and her sisters and their stepmother. Always mysteries.

Michael came with three of his children (Listed as Rosina, Michael, and Katharina) to Rochester. New York via New YorkC Ellis Island. They sailed on the Mount Clinton, sailing from Hamburg. Information is from the ship manifest. It stated that their passage was paid for by Michael's nephew, Stefan Holczimmer, and that they were going to his house at 31 Oakman Street, Rochester, New York. It also noted that Michael had been in Harrisburg, PA from 1907-1909. Michael had $200 upon landing. Her hair was listed as blond and her eyes, grey. Her height was 5'.

Very interesting that on the California death records, Rose's mother's maiden name is listed as Bartolf. I wonder why.

She loved to crochet -- besides the slippers, she also provided us with beautiful crocheted afghans. She did fancy tatting work. She loved Hummels and had a large collection of them.
