What we know ["search for the parentage of Roger Deering ... yields only a number of divergent possibilities"] is that Roger Deering was a shipwright and mariner from Townstall, Dartmouth, England, taxed there 1649-1663 and again 1671-2. Suits in English courts confirm that he was a contracting shipbuilder there before coming to Maine. Speculates he built ships her and sailed them back to England, so "bounced around a lot". First record of him is 4 Nov 1663 as witness. Mentioned as a neighbor in deed at Kittery as early as 5 Jun 1669. Administration on his estate granted to son Roger 4 Jul 1676.

Roger Deering, s/o George Deering [though that is doubtful, as George was in Maine 30 years before Roger, and would have had to have left his 11 year old son in England for this to fit], d. 26 Jun 1676.
