Facts and Events
[edit] OverviewRobert Wynne, the mayor, was the grandfather of Colonel Robert Wynne, Speaker of the House of Burgesses in Virginia during the Long Parliament, 1661-74. Colonel Robert Wynne was Speaker longer than any other man in Virginia's history. The Wynnes were members of Wollendrapers Guild. Robert Wynne, woolendraper, apprenticed to John Rose, Alderman, was released from his indentures and became a Freeman of the City in 1590. Nine years later, 1599, he was mayor of the ancient city of Canterbury. His sons became freemen by right of birth. Thomas Wynne, gentleman, son of Robert Wynne, became Free in 1612, and Peter Wynne, son of Robert Wynne, became Free in 1626. [edit] NotesThese sources say that the Wynne family is first mentioned in the records of Canterbury, England, in 1356, when John Wynne appears as a member of Parliament from Canterbury. From then to Robert Wynne, Mayor of Canterbury in 1599, the name appears often in the records of Canterbury. Roebert Wynne, mayor of Canterbury, was the grandfather of Col. RobertWynne, speaker of the House of Burgesses in VA in 1661-74. It was this Robert Wynne who m. Mrs. Mary Poythress. The Wynnes were members of the Wollendrapers Guild of Canterbury. Robert Wynne, mayor of Canterbury was buried at St. Georges in Canterbury on 6 Sept. 1609, his unnamed wife being buried two days later (Wynns, citing St. Georges Psh. Register). Robert Wynne was born in 1558/59 in Shrewsbury, Co. Shropshire, England. He married Francis Wattmer ca 1590 in England. Frances was born in 1565 in Stottesdon, Co. Six years later Robert was the Mayor of Canterbury, England, and held that office from 1596-1599. He and Frances died of the Plague within 2 days of each other. Their children were disbursed into other families. Robert died on 06 Sept 1609 and Frances died on 08 Sept 1609, both in Canterbury, Co. Kent, England. Subj: Fwd: Robert Wynne Will Date: 10/24/98 10:23:48 AM Eastern Standard Time From: BW Good To: Jandrecar ----------------- Forwarded Message: Subj: Robert Wynne Will Date: 10/22/98 7:58:19 AM Eastern Standard Time From: DGTUTTLE To: [email protected] CC: [email protected], BW Good Hi all, I finally got the will of Robert Wynne transcribed. The gal at the British reference desk helped me with the last of the words Tuesday. Here it is: This is the last will and Testament a nuncupative of Robert Wynne late of the parish of St. Mary Bredman in the City of Canterbury, Alderman deceased by him uttered and declared for his last will and testament he being in good and perfect memory on the fourth day of ye month of September 1609 in these words following or the like in effort viz the said Robert Wynne being moved to make his will he said his will was quickly made for he did give and bequeath to Frances his wife the one half of his goods and chattels and the other halfe of his good and chattels he did give & bequeath to his children and he did move and appoint Frances his wife to be Executrix of his will & he named William Wattmer his brother to be his overseer and the said Robert Wynne further willed that Frances his wife should pay to Sara Effield her legacy given her in ye will of Christopher Effield her father deceased of whom the said Robert Wynne was Executor. He should leave enough behind him to discharge the same. Witnesses present at the uttering of the promises by the said Testator Robert Wynne for his last will and testament. Joseph Colege, Mr. James Bissell, Clerk, Leonard Ashendon and others. s/ James Bissell, Leonard Ashendon. Probatum: (Proved) 5 Dec 1609 by witness John Fish, Executor James Bissell & Supervisor William Watmer. (Canterbury Wills, Comistory Court of Canterbury, Vol. 41 folio 4, FHL Film 188854) I am mailing Archaeologia Cantiana Vol. CII "A Notary of Canterbury: New Light on William Watmer, A Seventeenth-Century Mayor" by Geoffrey Whatmore & Chapter XII from Whatmore Panorama by Geoffrey Whatmore. I was not able to locate a will of the father of Frances Watmer, William Watmer who died in 1599 in Shropshire. I did locate a will which was probably written by his brother though. It was written in 1590 but half of the will is either missing as it was torn and damaged. It does not give his name but in the will the unknown Watmore leaves something to his brother William Watmore & a weanling bullock to "Frances, brother William's daughter." I have not transcribed what I can read of the will as yet. There are so many dark spots on the film and it is difficult to read because of the damaged edges of the will. I will write more later. Dorothy
