Nicol, former Editor of This Paper, Dies Early Saturday Morning Obituary Robert Burns Nicol was born in Hammond, St. Laurence county, New York, August 18, 1831. He was the son of William and Mary Pollock Nicol and was one of a family of thirteen, and was a twin with William Wallace Nicol who passed away about fifteen years ago. On 5 July 1857, in New York city, he was married to Miss Mary Kelley, who died leaving three small children. In March [] 1862, he enlisted in Co. I, 11th New York Volunteer cavalry and served until July 8, 1864, when he was honorably discharged on account of physical disability, at Washington, D.C. He remained in Washington for several years, where he was engaged in selling his patriotic songs to the soldiers and working in the printing office of Gibson Bros. In 1869 he came to Dickinson county and homesteaded land in Westport township and made that his home, engaging in farming and teaching school until 1883, when the family moved to Milford, where he purchased the printing plant of the Milford Mail. He was editor and publisher of the Mail for about seventeen years. On March 13, 1879, he was married to Mrs. Martha E. Beers, who had three children by her first husband, two of whom have gone on before. Of this union four children were born. He was one of the early settlers of the community and was influential in the organization and advancement of the community. He was a member of Wallar Post, G. A. R., and of Gloaming Lodge, No. 482 A. F. & A. M. and always took an active part in the work of these bodies until compelled by ill health to give up the duties. He leaves, besides the wife, two brothers, David M., of California, and Clark L., of Milford; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Kensler, of Clifty, West Virginia; Mrs. John Dickerson of Lake Park; four sons, William, of St. Louis, Robert H., of Fresno, California, Mortimer E., of Omaha, and Ray B., of Terril, Iowa; three daughters, Mrs. E. G. Nichols, of Huntington, West Virginia, Mrs. Ed L. Jones, of Ryegate, Montana, and Mrs. R. E. Lintner, of Sibley, Iowa; one step son, Carlos F. Beers, of Milford. He was 81 years, 5 months and 4 days old at the time of his death at his home in Milford, on January 22, 1916. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. H. C. Ni[ss]on, assisted by Dr. Baker, of the Congregational church. Interment was made in Okoboji cemetery, where the full Masonic service was held with E. C. Narey, of Spirit Lake, in charge.
