Bastardy Cases in Baltimore Co, MD 1673-1783, Henry Peden JR, 2001

Case of Henry Beach 1767/1771 Henry Beach was charged with unlawful cohabitation with Elizabeth Dixon by the vestry of St. George’s Parish on 16 Mar 1767. Jane Beach was summoned as evidence. They were charged again and summoned on 5 Mar 1770. Henry and his wife appeared and declared that she had reason to believe he did unlawfully cohabit with Elizabeth Dixon upon which the said Beach to appear at the next vestry and bring a certificate from under the hands of his neighbors that they have parted on 21 May 1770. Henry produced a certificate by Samuel Smith, Jane Smith, and Robert Hawkins that Elizabeth Dixon has left his house and they do not think they cohabit together at present on 4 June 1770. Yet on 15 Apr 1771 another complaint was brought against Henry and Elizabeth for unlawful cohabitation. Whether or not these situations resulted in any actual bastardy cases per se will require further research…Ref St. George’s Parish Vestry Minutes (Reamy’s Abstracts) p110-111
