Born in northern northern Ireland. Settled in Londonderry, Nova Scotia with his father, William.

Moved to Black Rock, Nova Scotia around 1790, by trading his Londonderry farm with that of Francis Creelman of Black Rock.(citation 2) Another source lists the location of the original farm at Debert, which is just east of Londonderry.(citation 8)

Before 1811, he operated a ferry over across the Shubenacadie river with son, William.(citation 5) Died in Black Rock, 1812.
