Robert, "Bob", Dorman lived his entire life in the same home he was born in. He grew up on his parents family farm on Shumla Road on the outskirts of Cassadaga exploring the fields and woods, helping with farm chores, and going to school. The family placed a high value on education and he did well at school. He went on to become a School Teacher after attending Fredonia Normal School but didn't teach long, if at all. His father died in 1930, when Bob was 23 years old. He stayed home from then on to run the farm along with his mother and younger siblings. His mother moved off the farm when she married Emmett Campbell a few years later. Bob married Agnes Richardson in 1933. They made the Dorman farm their home for the remainder of their years. They raised their own children in addition to providing a home for Joyce Richardson, Agnes's younger sister, after their mother died, and for Bob's brother, Emmett Dorman, after his mother remarried.

Bob and Agnes farmed with horses in the early days together. They always had a few cows and chickens. They were caring stewards to their woods, carefully culling the weaker trees for their firewood. They had a large garden and fruit trees that provided vegetables and fruit for canning.
