Lois grew up in a multigenerational home. Her grandmother, Mary Dorman, lived with them and helped out with child care, cooking, and household chores.

Lois went to Fredonia Normal School to become a teacher. She started teaching in one room school houses in Ellery and Picketts Corners. She was responsible for the teaching of the children, stoking the wood fire stove, and all manners of situations that came up. She loved being a teacher. She eventually got a teaching position at the Frewsburg Central School and could walk to the school from her home.
