Robert Joseph Costello, known as "Joe," was a cigar maker at T. J. Dowd and, in later years, a turnkey at the county jail. On September 12, 1918, he registered for the draft during the First World War. He was 42 years old.
After Joe and Mary were married in 1907, they made their home in Nashua with Mary's mother, Helen, on Allds street. He and Mary were separated when the two boys, William and Andrew were quite young. They never got divorced as they were Catholic and the church didn't allow it. After they separated, Joe moved back to Manchester where he was brought up.
The following are quotes from family members:
I don't remember much about my father. He only visited my brother and me a couple of times after he moved out, and my mother would go into her bedroom and stay there until he was gone. ....«i» Andrew Costello«/i»
When I asked my grandmother why she married Joe, she said "He made her laugh."
....«i» Cathleen Wheeler«/i»
(Medical): Bronchial asthma 15-20 years
Myocarditis - 5 years
