Mary (Barron) Costello taught elocution, piano, and dance. She was very well-known and respected in the community. The following article appeared in the Nashua Telegraph written by one of her former students: At one time the advent of the winter dancing season at High school used to send any number of boys dashing to Mrs. Costello for dancing lessons. The young man to keep up with things had to invite someone to his Junior and Senior prom and the young lady naturally expected to dance a little. Mrs. Costello used to be able to teach, the young fellows enough to keep from stepping on their partner's toes with a couple of lessons. That's about all they took. From then on they were on their own and some of them developed into pretty good dancers.

The following are some quotes from various family members.

Mary was engaged to a doctor before she married Joe. She met Joe and broke the engagement to the doctor off, but she didn't want to give the ring back. In order to convince her to give the ring back, her mother promised to buy her another one. ....«i»Kathleen (Costello) Wheeler«/i»

After Mary gave birth to her first son, her mother sent her to live with her Uncle Andrew in Vermont for a few weeks to recuperate. In those days, it was thought that the baby depleted all of your strength, and the cure for that was lots of rest and red meat. ....«i»Kathleen (Costello) Wheeler

«/i»A woman named Ruth Mask rented a room from Mary beginning in 1925 and became a lifelong companion. Ruth worked as a stenographer and later a bookkeeper at Demaris Convalescent Home. She brought home a regular paycheck every week, so she sustained the family in times of need. Ruth was born 5 August 1896 in Richmond, Virginia. She died on 6 August 1955 and is buried in Hudson in the Costello family lot. ....«i»Marjorie (Johnson) Champagne

«/i»Anyone, anytime, was welcome at Mary's house. It didn't matter how tight the budget was, she would invite you to stay for the next meal, and just water down the soup to make it stretch. ....«i»Marjorie (Johnson) Champagne

«/i»The last thing I remember about my great-grandmother is her giving my brother and me each a poem to memorize and recite. Both poems by Robert Lewis Stevenson, mine was «i»The Swing«/i» and my brother's poem was «i»My Shadow«/i». ...«i»Brenda Costello«i»

«i»The Swing «/i» How do you like to go up in a swing? Up in the air so blue? Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing Ever a child can do!

Up in the air and over the wall, Till I can see so wide, Rivers and trees and cattle and all Over the countryside--

Till I look down on the garden green, Down on the roof so brown - Up in the air, I go flying again, Up in the air and down!

«i» My Shadow«/i» I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me, And what can be the use of him is more than I can see. He is very, very like me from the heels up to the head; And I see him jump before me when I jump into my bed.

The funniest thing about him is the way he likes to grow-- Not at all like proper children, which is always very slow; For he sometimes shoots up taller like an india-rubber ball, And he sometimes goes so little that there's none of him at all.

He hasn't got a notion of how children ought to play, And can only make a fool of me in every sort of way. He stays so close behind me, he's a coward you can see; I'd think shame to stick to nursie as that shadow sticks to me!

One morning, very early, before the Sun was up, I rose and found the shining dew on every buttercup; But my lazy little shadow, like an arrant sleepy-head, Had stayed at home behind me and was fast asleep in bed.
