Robert was born Catholic about 1828 in County Kerry, Ireland, the son of Robert Costello and Joanna Savage.
Catholic emancipation was granted in 1829.
He arrived in the United States on the "stern Star" on 12 May 1850 in the port of Boston, Massachusetts from Liverpool.
Robert settled in Manchester, New Hampshire, and worked at Stark Mills in the textile industry. He married Julia Tanany in 1852 and had two children, Michael and Bridget. Julia and Bridget
Robert married second to Ellen Carey on 1 September 1870 in Manchester, NH. Robert and Ellen brought six more little Irishmen into the world. Robert and Ellen bought a property on 448 Chestnut St. in Manchester on 2 December 1878. The property was 21 1/2 feet by 40 feet. Robert and Ellen ran a saloon downstairs and lived upstairs with their family.

the funeral of Robert Costello took place yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, Rev. Father James Dougherty officiating. The funeral was under the direction of the Ancient Order of Hiberians, of which the deceased was a member. L. P. Reynolds, president of the society, acted as marshal, with James H. Hunghey and E. G. McLaughlin as aids. The bearers were from the society and were Florence Sullivan, Dennis McEvoy, Patrick Burke, Michael Hawkins, John F. Sullivan and Joseph Murphy. The remains were interred in the St. Joseph Cemetery.
