Facts and Events
Before moving to Australia, Richard lived in Hinton Ampner, near Alresford, Hampshire. He attended the local All Saints Church. He was only able to attend school until grade 3. He enlisted in the Territorial Army on 15-Sep-1923 as a Private in the Infantry with the intention of serving for four years. His family was relatively poor, so this was probably largely in order to move away from home. However, he was discharged at his own request on 16-Jun-1924 at Exeter, 4th Hampshire Regiment, after serving just 276 days. Richard then left Tilbury, London, on 19-Jun-1924 aged 17 years for the Port of Adelaide, South Australia, aboard the Steam Ship Bendigo (at a cost of \pounds 33). The ship arrived at Fremantle, Western Australia, on 26-Jul-1924 before he continued on to Adelaide. Arriving in South Australia, he worked for the Hood family (near the Rawlins family in Wynarka?) in his teenage years, during which time he met (Evelyn) Merle Illman. With his expertise in making machinery needed back in Australia, he didn't go off to fight during the Second World War. Instead, he became Air Raid Warden for the West Torrens Municipal District, South Australia, from 24-Feb-1942. His occupation in 1952 was listed as a Welder when called for jury duty (although his name was spelt 'Laurence' on the letter of notification). He was a man of great religious faith and a local preacher. Richard was a man with impish sense of humour and a love of music -- sang and played the mouth organ (owned a variety of Hohner harmonicas). Richard was also a member of the Freemasons. References
