The eldest of six children. Her family moved to a farm at Dowlingville, South Australia, and then to Balaklava. She received her Qualifying Certificate from the Public School at Balaklava on December 1, 1923. After eight years, they returned to the City of Adelaide and Colonel Light Gardens.

During her teens, she worked at Wynarka near Murray Bridge, South Australia, for the Rawlins family, and it was there that she met her husband to be. In 1939, she moved to her Argyle Avenue residence in Marleston, South Australia, where she lived until her death.

Her family and church were very important in her life. She was an active member of the Kurralta Park Methodist Church, and a foundation member of the Hare Street Uniting Church. She was involved in the Ladies Guild and Women's Fellowship. Her faith gave her great strength after the death of her husband and allowed her to recover from two heart attacks.

The following verse was kept on her dressing table and typifies her life and her attitude to her Christian faith (author unknown):

God hath not promised
Skies ever blue.
Flower-strewn pathways
Always for you:

God hath not promised
Sun without rain,
Joy without sorrow,
Peace without pain:
But He hath promised
Strength from above,
Unfailing sympathy,
Undying love.
