Richard Harry was baptised on 12th January 1783 at St Ive in eastern Cornwall, son of Sarah Harry, formerly Grubb, and her husband Robert Harry, a labourer. He was the third of the couple's eight children. Some time between 1797 and 1800 the family left St Ive and moved ten miles south to the town of Saltash.

In 1808 Richard witnessed his brother John's marriage at St Stephen by Saltash, the parish church which covered Saltash. The other witness to that marriage was Susan Ellery. Four months later, aged 26, Richard married Susan Ellery at the same church. They do not appear to have had any children.

In each census from 1841 to 1861 Richard and Susan were living in an area of Saltash known as Turnpike Gate. Richard worked as a gardener. They had four lodgers living with them in the 1851 census.

Richard died in late 1865, aged 82. Susan died shortly afterwards.
