Richard Crockett was born in Paddington, New South Wales, Australia in 1861 to Thomas John Crockett and Jane Diplock. Richard had an older half-sister from his mother, also known as Jane Diplock and two elder half brothers from his father, John and Thomas. Richard was the eldest of eleven children through both his parents, of which only four others survived beyond infancy. Richard grew up at 64 Taylor St in what was Surrey Hills at the time and is now Darlinghurst.

On the 12th of June 1886, Richard Crockett married Jane McDougall at the Presbyterian Church in Elizabeth St, Sydney. Information from their marriage certificate shows that at this time he was living in Paddington, Sydney and working as a Plasterer. Richard and Jane had two children before Jane died in Sydney, NSW, Australia 18th May 1896,with complications from the birth of their son.

Richard worked as a plasterer for at least 18 years of his life. At some stage Richard became a field inspector with the water board. Richard was still a good looking man, even in his later years and would draw attention from the girls when he would visit Thelma (Tom), one his granddaughters at her workplace in Woolworths, Sydney. Richard died in 1940 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
