Jane McDougall was born in Scotland in 1850, the second of seven children for Alexander McDougall (1827-1905), a marine engineer and Christina Couper (1828-1906). Jane emigrated to Australia in 1855 with her parents. They arrived in Moreton Bay, Queensland, before moving to Sydney that same year.

Richard and Jane had two children before Jane died in Sydney, NSW, Australia 18th May 1896,with complications from the birth of their son.
