Facts and Events
[edit] ObituarySpencerville Journal News, September 17, 1931 Rhea Mae Medaugh was born August 24, 1897, in the State of Indiana, and died September 7, 1931, at the Monnette Memorial Hospital in Bucyrus, Ohio, age 34 years and 13 days. Her death followed injuries received in an automobile accident three days previously. In 1911 she was received into the local Trinity M. E. Church, under the pastorate of Reverend Howey, and of this church she remained a faithful member to the time of her death. She was also a member of the Spencerville Chapter of the Eastern Star. Rhea was a graduate of the 1915 class of Spencerville high school. She then attended the State Normal Schools at Bowling Green and Kent, Ohio, and embarked seriously on her career as a teacher. For the past fifteen years she had followed her profession; teaching five years at Ohio City, and five years at Akron, as well as at Middletown, Ohio, and in both the town and rural schools locally. For the past six years, when not occupied with her duties as a teacher, she has made her home with her brother Russell, at this place. Her steadfast qualities of mind and character were such that she attracted and held the affection and loyalty of an exceptionally large number of friends. Keenly aware of her responsibilities as a teacher of youth, she always strove to guide her pupils aright both by precept and example. Beloved by her pupils and co-workers, of unusual ability, and at the height of her powers, her untimely death has cut short a career that would undoubtedly have carried her to the very crest of her profession. She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Della Medaugh, now a patient at Monnette Memorial hospital, at Bucyrus, Ohio; a father, Glen Medaugh, north of Spencerville; a sister, Mrs. Coila McGillvary, of Lima; two brothers, Russell and Carl; and a sister, Carolyn, all of this place; a niece, Lenore, and a nephew, Gene McGillvary, of Lima, as well as many other relatives, and a host of friends. [edit] Tom Brown's Notes on Ancestry.com shared November 8, 2013Rhea Medaugh was a 34-year-old teacher in the Akron public school system. Accompanied by mother Della Brown Medaugh and brother Gaylord Carl Medaugh, she was returning to Akron on Labor Day to begin the new school year the following day when their car driven by Carl struck a Lincoln Highway bridge abutment near Bucyrus in Crawford County.
