Random thoughts re Fassnacht-Smith from Jack R. Smith, July 1966:

"1. Many years ago I recall someone saying (JMS?) that mother's family (Fassnachts) had been in the railroad business in Germany.

(if the railroad story is true, perhaps it was Johannes' father who was involved with a railroad or perhaps his grandfather- if Altensteig was a rail terminus in the 1800s, then it could be that the younger Johannes was put in charge of the hotel there- or built it to take advantage of the tourism. It's possible that the Sternen dates from 1800 or earlier, since Johannes(1822-1863) was born in Altensteig.)"

[NOTE1: It's the STERN Inn, not the Sternen; the STERN inn was definitely identified in the Altensteig Ortsippenbuch with Johannes' father. The Altensteig Ortsippenbuch makes no mention of railroad business in the family. If there was, it may have been in the families into which the female Fassnachts married (e.g., Hennseler, Bauser); worth checking. -- JSS]

"2. Uncle John Smith tells the story that Regina Erhart was a governess (Maid) in the Fassnacht household and ran off with Johannes to America- being married on the boat.

(if Regina's family was in the fish business in Stuttgart as Ann Erhart thinks- perhaps Regina didn't like it and went to Altensteig to work in the Sternen, which I now believe to be a hotel.)"

[NOTE2: See above re: "Sternen". Also, we have since learned that not only are marriages on board ship unlikely at that time, but we found their marriage record in Buffalo church records.]
