  6. Several undocumented on-line public trees, as well as three Ancestral File pages state John died in 1896, and that Rebecca died in 1885. (Ancestral Files 2KC4-TCH, 2K89-2P0, 1G9Q-VL5).
In 1880 there were two William Fergusons living in Illinois with a wife named Rebecca. A William Ferguson in Pike County, Illinois was 58 and born in Virginia. His wife Rebecca was 59 and born in Kentucky. They were both still living in 1900, and appear in the 1900 US Census for Pike County. They cannot be the William Ferguson whose widow Rebecca applied for a widow's pension in 1890.
Neither couple appears in the 1890 US Veterans Schedule.
Company B of the 18th Illinois Infantry, part of the basis for the pension applications, was composed primarily of men from Gallatin County, neighboring county to Saline County. Pike County, where the other William and Rebecca Ferguson lived, was on the other side of the state. Again, the service record suggests that the pension applications are for William and Rebecca Ferguson of Saline County, not Pike County.
Without any documentation to report the death dates given by others, death dates supported by the Pension Application seem more reasonable.
