Facts and Events
Name[1][3] Rebecca Wiekle
Alt Name Rebecca Wakelee
Gender Female
Birth[1] Est 1645 Estimate based on date of marriage.
Marriage 25 Apr 1665 Fairfield, Fairfield, Connecticut, United Statesto Ezekiel Sanford

Rebecca "Wiekle", Wife of Ezekiel Sanford, Not a Whelpley

"Jacobus discussed this couple twice, and in both instances commented on the bride's surname, which he read as we have given it here from the original. In 1930 he simply stated that 'She was possibly daughter of James or Henry Wakelee' (FOOF 1:518). In 1960 he said 'This is probably a variant of Wakelee, and it cannot be read as Whelpley, though often so printed. The marriage and births of the children are entered in Fairfield records, but this does not constitute proof that the marriage occurred there' (Ackley-Bosworth 86). In support of these statements by Jacobus, we note that on the same page of the original Fairfield record as the Sanford marriage, just five entries above, written in the same hand, is the 7 October 1682 birth of 'Joseph Whelply the son of Joseph Whelply' [Fairfield LR A2:681], clearly distinguishing the two surnames."[1]

Parentage

Her father may have been James Wakelee of Hartford and Rhode Island (by a wife before his known wife Alice). It is unlikely that her father was Henry Wakelee of Hartford and Stratford, as she was born before his only known marriage and was not mentioned in his will.
