Relationships

It is possible that Rebecca Wiekle, wife of Ezekiel Sanford, and/or Richard Wakelee were his children. If so, they would have been by an unknown first wife.

Various sources have suggested that James Wakelee (who married Alice (-----) Boosey in 1652) was the father, older brother or older half-brother of Henry Wakelee (d. 1690). Jacobus, in History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield, vol. I, suggests that they were, at "a reasonable guess", father and son. However, he also indicates that James was "said to have been living" in 1690, and then suggests a birth year of "by 1610" or even "by 1600". Henry was born "by 1620". Assuming that James was not born any earlier than 1600, it seems more likely that the two were brothers or half-brothers than father and son. However, this is still merely speculation.

    'Wakelee, James.

He had lands recorded in Hartford, Feb. 1639/40. ...He m. 5 Oct. 1652, Alice, widow of James Boosey of Wethersfield, and removed there. ... Before Jan. 1663 he fled from his wife and family to Rhode Island. In May 1663, Henry Wakelee had a power of attorney from James. ... [James] had been accused of a capital crime, presumably witchcraft.
Attempts of James and Alice to divorce each other were unsuccessful. She d. at Wethersfield, 30 Aug. 1683. He ... is said to have been living in Providence as late as 1690, when he must have been quite old, as he certainly was b. by 1610, and we should guess that he was b. by 1600.
The relationship of James to Henry and Richard is not exactly determined, but it is a reasonable guess that they were his sons by an earlier marriage.'

  3. If it is not assumed that James and Henry were father and son, there seems to be no reason to put James' birth year any earlier than 1610.
