Rebecca Jackson
b.Abt 1812
Facts and Events
AUGUST 2008: AN UNSUBSTANTIATED STORY ON ANCESTRY.COM says that Rebecca is the daughter of Stephen Jackson, son of William. This is very likely true but I, Janie, am still awaiting verification of this!!
SEPTEMBER 2008: For some time I've had cautionary remarks in the notes of Rebecca Jackson Lowe, conjectured dau of William Jackson, s/o Gen Joseph Jackson. New information has arrived that Rebecca is more likely the daughter of William's son Stephen and though this sounds more logical to me, it is not verified yet. Rather than remove all of Rebecca and Jacob Low's descendants from online, I am moving her to be Stephen's daughter, again with these cautionary notes, hoping that verification can be made soon.
From Darrell Jackson's Notes:
"I will record Rebecca as a daughter of William and Barsheba Jackson and a sister of David based on:
1) Her area of residence and association with the Low family. She and her brother David married Low siblings.
2) Her marriage was officiated by a man named 'Keys' as was her brother David Jackson's marriage.
3) She named a daughter Eura, (probably phonetic) for her mother-in-law Ury's name and a son William after her father.
The eight children of Jacob Low and his wife Rebecca Jackson are from a genealogy published by Cindy Pegg on a website . . . The info on David Kitsmiller Lowe was rec'd from Joetta Canter of Carter Co."
Janie says: The website by Cindy Pegg mentioned by Darrell is no longer available.
The researcher should take the info with caution as the relationship between Rebecca and her conjectured father, William, needs more conclusive evidence. Rebecca is just a mite young IF census ages below can be believed. But William had 4 sons, John, Joseph, Stephen and David - proved by his will (which doesn't mention any of his daughters!) It is possible that Rebecca is a daughter of any of the first three sons mentioned. There weren't any other Jackson families in that area at that time that we know of; so she probably does connect there somewhere. Any additional info on Rebecca and Jacob Low will be appreciated! (The Bible record mentioned on ancestry.com in Aug/Sept 2008 is the first indication I've seen that verifies that Rebecca is indeed a dau of Stephen. Recognizing that there are still some questions about the Bible records to be resolved, I will move Rebecca to be Stephen's daughter.)
I did not find the 1850 or 1860 Census for Jacob and Rebecca, but I did find them on the 1870. I assumed this was the same family based on the child Kitsmiller being included. The following 1850 & 1860 census copied from Janet Ariciu's rootsweb chart:

Lowe, Lucinda 15 F W at home TN Cannot write
Lowe, Kitzmiller 14 M W at home TN Cannot read or write (this age does not agree with the 1860 or 1880, so is probably an error.)
The following 1880 Census is not only mis-read and indexed (Lone vs Lowe) but they have Rebecca as mother-in-law instead of mother. If she had been a m-i-l her last name would have been different. Again, I am concerned about Rebecca being too young to be William Jackson's daughter, and the recent finding of Bible records that say Rebecca is daughter of Stephen makes more sense. Rebecca could read but not write. It is possible that this 1880 census is not our Rebecca and her son David Kitzmiller Lowe. David's age is not quite right, but he is on record as having married a Mary Catherine and the location is right.
