Marriage 1817 Culpeper County, Virginiato Hawkins Popham

Rebecca Hawkins, ca 1801. She married, first, her half-nephew Hawkins Popham in 1817 in Culpeper. He was the son of Humphrey Popham and Betsy Hawkins, Betsy being Rebecca's half sister. This marriage was anulled on the grounds of consanguinity during 1822-24 Chancery Court suit to divide the estate of Job Hawkins. It seemed to be a convenient way to get a divorce, for immediately after this Rebecca married John STORY by whom she had ten children, the first of whom was born on 12 June 1824.
