Will of Matthew Hawkins Sr. of Culpeper County, Virginia - June 19, 1820

WILL BOOK H, pages 196-197

I Matthew Hawkins Senr. Of Culpeper county and State of Virginia being of sound mind memory do make & ordain this my last will & Testament (revoking all other wills and Testaments by me) heretofore made in manner and form following

First I give and bequeath to my wife Betty Hawkins one negro girl named Gilly and her increase, one negro boy named Joshua, their beds bedsteads and furniture one folding Table one bureau one Chest half a dozen chairs a parcel of Pewter one pot and one frying pan to her heirs forever. Also I leave to my Wife during her natural life one half of the tract of Land I purchased of Frederick Kobler the part which falls to her to contain the buildings that is on said land.

Then I leave to my two sons Job Hawkins and James Hawkins in trust for the benefit of my daughter Rebecca Popham and her child or children the residue of the tract of land I purchased of Frederick Kobler also a negro woman Polly and her increase one negro girl named Fanny and her increase and two negro boys named Wesley and Howard after my wife's decease. I then leave to my two sons above mentioned and in trust for the benefit of my daughter Rebecca Popham and her child or children the land which I left to my wife during her natural life. It is my will and desire that the lands and negroes which I leave in trust with my two sons for the benefit of my Daughter Rebecca to be applied for the use and maintenance of herself and child or children during her natural life and after decease then I give the above named land and negroes with their increase unto the child or children of my Daughter Rebecca Popham to them and their heirs forever but in case my daughter Rebecca leaves no child or children [pg.197] then the aforesaid land and negroes with their increase I give to my two sons Job Hawkins and James Hawkins to them and their heirs forever.

Item I give to my sons Job Hawkins and James Hawkins one hundred acres of Land I now live on being the Land I purchased at the sheriff's sale also the Land I purchased of John Ball containing fifty eight acres the said one hundred and fifty eight acres, to be equally divided between them, to them and their heirs forever.Item I leave to Humphrey Popham and his wife Betty (my Daughter) one dollar and no more.

Item I leave Thomas Popham who intermarried with daughter Phebe one dollar and no more.

Item I leave to Benjamin Duncan and his wife Susanna, my Daughter, one dollar and no more.

Item I leave to Hawkins Popham one dollar and no more

Item the remainder and residue of my estate my will and desire is that it be sold to the highest bidder and the money arising from the sale thereof to be equally divided among the following legatees after deducting the sum of two hundred dollars for my daughter Mary Lightfoot's part, my Wife Betty Hawkins, my Son Job Hawkins, the children of my son John Hawkins dec'd, my Son James Hawkins, my grandsons Samual Hawkins, Claressa Kilby, Sarah Ann Ballinger Kilby, Varenda Kilby, Melinda Kilby and Julian Franklin Kilby, these six grandchildren are to have one child's part to be equally divided amongst them their brother Samual Hawkins will receive their respective shares & give to each one their part my daughter Mary Lightfoot and my Daughter Rebecca Popham but whatever comes to her part I have entrust to my two sons Job Hawkins & James Hawkins also my Grandson Augustine Hawkins

Executors of this my last Will and Testament in Witness whereof I have herewith Set my hand and seal this the 27th day of May in this year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and Twenty.
