Sacred Heart Cathedral Grade School, His first five years of school were in the Knife River School which had four rooms for 12 grades. He would not have attended St. Mary's Grade School because the Franciscan nuns there taught many of the classes in the Polish language. Apparently, his parents only spoke Polish with each other when they didn't want the kids to understand what they were saying. According to Joanne, Dad did know a few words of Polish, could count to 10, etc. |

Duluth, St. Louis, Minnesota, United StatesBarnes Duluth Shipyard, Fitter, "Foot of Spring", Riverside ; He had to quit his job at E.F. Berg Restaurant Supplies and get a job in a Defense Industry to keep his exempt draft status (High number and 1 child). He was at Barnes-Duluth when I was born in May of 1942. He was re-classified 1A in June of 1943, at age 32. When his number came up again in 1944, Mom was pregnant with Rick and they decided to let him keep his deferrment as it was obvious that the War would be won. He described his job as "boilermaker", which implies that he worked in the engine rooms of the ships Marian in one of her letters suggested to him that he go work on the Construction of the Alaskan Highway which was being done as a defense measure during the war to stop a possible Japanese invasion there. The construction money was quite good. But he built ships, instead. When it was apparent that the war would be over soon, and that the shipbuilding would end in Duluth, he quit the shipyards and first tried the Duluth Fire Department (he didn't like it) and then the Post Office. |

- ↑ Moved to Duluth when Alger Smith Lumber shut down
--Eleanor Wilson loved to tell the story about how she and her sister Dolores, "Dolly", and "city slickers" both, got such a kick of 11 year old Ray and his brothers and how they became so fascinated by electricity and light switches (Marian was only 3). They would push the buttons "on" and "off" (that's the way it was in those days) for seemingly endless periods until parents, uncles or aunts laid down the law and stopped the kids from having their fun.
Being that Ray and Richie had been in a public school (the one-roomed Knife River School), they did not speak much Polish so their parents did not enroll them in the St. Stanislaus Polish Grade School operated by St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Parish. Eddie, probably already demonstrating his learning problems, no doubt did not attend school after it became apparent that he would not be successful there.
- ↑ Family Vacation, Kakabeka Falls, Zoo, Meal in a Restaurant (only time all seven of us ate out together), smuggled pocket watch across the border to evade customs, Players Please, Women couldn't go into bar-rooms,
- ↑ Summer Vacation: Rented houskeeping cabin for a week
- ↑ Summer Vacation: Rented Housekeeping cabin for couple of weeks; pontoon boats
- ↑ Used Ed Lepak's barn for the raw materials. Dad and I were partners with Ed and his brother, Mike. They had another brother, Romie (Roman). Ed lived with his mom on the homestead in Gnesen Township. She would cook great meals for us on our return from hunting. None of us ever got a deer.
I used the 12 guage with slugs as my "weapon." Dad had the 30-30. I was allowed to unload it. One time, as Dad, Mike and Ed were chatting at the end of the day, I began unloading it using the lever action and then pulled the trigger, firing the next shell. Fortunately it was pointed at the wood pile just outside the front door of the shack. To my dying day I remain grateful to them for not saying one word to me. For Polacks, that may have been their supreme lifetime achievement.
As I was a caddie and had income, I was expected to be an equal financial partner. I was. Probably cost me less than $100 all told. The shack was built on 40 acres of land leased from St. Louis County. Ed and Mike were both older than Dad, so I expect that the lease ran out for non-payment soon after 1960 or so.
