  5. First (only?) President to stay overnight in the City (Hotel Duluth). Less than two months before his assassination. It was his last trip before Dallas.

Mary went up to U.M.D. to see him and got to shake his hand. She did. Then she decided to get in line and shake it again. When her turn came again, he remembered her and said "Are you here again?" The mark of the consummate politician is a perfect memory for faces and names.

Needless to say, she was thrilled.

Calvin Cooledge stayed on the Brule River in Wisconsin at least one summer during his presidency in the days before Air Conditioning when Washington D.C. was unliveable during the Summer. Superior Central High School became the Summer White House during the period.

Harry Truman was in a parade in Duluth during his terms. I remember Mom and Mrs. Heikkenen (Ethyl, married to Otto, next door neighbor) walking down to Superior Street to watch him. Rick would have been in the buggy, probably Nancy H. too, and Carol H. and I walked along. I vaguely remember a man in the back seat of a convertible waving his hat. Otto was a barber at the Metropole Barber Shop, next to Joe Huie's Restaurant on S. Lake Avenue. They moved to Floodwood about 1950.
