Redesignated as the 166th Infantry and assigned to the 37th Infantry Division 1 July 1921. Inducted into Federal service 15 October 1940 at Columbus. Relieved from the 37th Division 16 January 1942. Inactivated as follows: Regiment, less 2d and 3d Battalions, 1 February 1944 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma; 2d Battalion, 22 February 1944 at Camp Hood, Texas; and 3d Battalion, 12 February 1945 at Fort Sill. Assigned to the 166th Regimental Combat Team 3 July 1946: Reorganized and Federally recognized 11 November 1946 with Headquarters at Columbus.
