Newspaper Article, 1950: Board Names Ray Glunz Director of School Sports Ray G. Glunz, a veteran of 28 years service in Buffalo's elementary and high school gyms, today was appointed director of physical education in the Buffalo public schools. Glunz was recommended for the post by Supt. of Schools Benjamin C. Willis at the Board of Education meeting this morning in City Hall. The board unanimously approved the recommendation. At the same time, the board approved a recommendation by Supt. Willis for the appointment of Carl A. Spitzer of Riverside High School as temporary assistant to Glunz. Glunz, 49 years old, succeeds Eugene Hofmeister, who died last Dec. 18, after a long illness. The new director had served as assistant under Hofmeister since Sept. 1, 1946.

Won 3 Cage Titles: Glunz was a grade schools instructor for two years before being promoted to Hutchinson High School in 1924. He stayed at Hutch until 1941, then served five years at Emerson Vocational before moving downtown as assistant to Hofmeister. In his 28 years in the school gyms, Glunz coached basketball, baseball, track and golf. He also was quite an athlete himself in his high school days at Technical. At Tech, the new director earned letters in football, basketball, baseball and track. The highlight of Glunz's coaching career came during his reign as head cage mentor at Hutch. He coached an outstanding squad which won the Yale Cup Series championship for three consecutive years, 1936-1938.

Attended U.B. Classes: Glunz, who lives at 178 Warren Ave., Kenmore, was graduated from Indianapolis Normal College in 1921. He received his Bachelor of Science degree at Canisius College in 1936, and completed work on his master's degree at University of Buffalo in 1945. Spitzer, the new temporary assistant, has served in the Buffalo schools for 24 years. His service includes eight years at School 76, two years at South Park and he has been at Riverside High for the last 14 years. Spitzer, 52 years old, has coached football, basketball, baseball, track, cross-country and hockey. He was graduated from Indianapolis Normal College in 1926.
