Pluma Darlene (Green) Shouse was born September 20, 1912, on her parents’ farm northeast of Orient, IA. She was the fourth of five children born to Leota Mae (Bowen) and Edward Thomas Green. Pluma grew up on the farm working alongside her father and three brothers. She attended and graduated from Hill of Zion School. She carried fond memories of playing on the basketball team and going to the State Fair with her 4-H Bread Making Team during those school years.

On September 7, 1934, she married Robert (Bob) Shouse at Columbus, Nebraska. They first made their home in the Zion area, then in Creston. In 1942 they moved to Burlington, IA where Bob was employed as a fireman at the Ammunitions Ordinance Plant. On their return to Creston in 1944 they purchased a home at 500 N. Division. They house lacked modern facilities but Pluma and Bob worked side by side digging the ditches and laying the lines for water, natural gas and electricity. Pluma loved being a wife, homemaker, mother and grandmother. She always had time to stop whatever she was doing to play with her grandchildren. She spent many hours tending her garden and flowers and was an avid reader. After many years of being a homemaker she worked in various restaurants and retail stores in Creston.

After Bob died, she loved to travel by motor home with her daughter and son-in-law to various places in the U.S. She had a life-long dream of attending the Grand Ole’ Opry and that dream was realized when the 3 of them traveled to Nashville, TN for her 89th birthday. She lived in the house on Division Street 62 years before health issues made it necessary for her to move to Maple Ridge Assisted Living in Mount Ayr, IA. In November, 2007 continued failing health forced her to move to Mount Ayr Health Care and in April of 2008 she moved to Fleur Heights Care and Rehab in Des Moines to be near her family.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Coral (husband Gene) Smith of Des Moines; granddaughters: Sheila (husband Bob) Stefani of Pleasant Hill, IA; Liz (husband Matt) Deluhery of Sandford, NC; grandson Joseph (wife Barb) Smith of Grapevine, TX; 8 great grandchildren, Mindi (husband Tim) Bailey of Des Moines, Tony Stefani (fiancé Heidi Prill) of Des Moines, IA, Max Smith, Hannah Smith, Amy, Sarah, Theo and Marty Deluhery; 3 great-great-grandchildren, Hailey, Jacob and Boston Bailey; several special nieces: Jean Baker of Urbandale, IA, Geraldine Bartlett of Indianola and Kerry Chase of Creston.

Pluma was preceded in death by her husband Bob in 1995, son Dean in 1985, her sister Muriel Kuhns and her brothers, Clair, Rex and Max Green.
