Carl Bangs, Phineas F. Bresee, His Life in Methodism, the Holiness Movement and the Church of the Nazarene (Beacon Hill Press of Kansas City 1995), page 35.

  2.   Dr. Bangs states in his book "Phineas F. Bresee, his life in Methodism, the Holiness Movement, and the Church of the Nazarene" on page 37, that PPB, the youngest child in his family (he was not the youngest child but was the youngest male child), was adopted by his aunt who's husband was Phineas Philips. In Girvin's book, "Phineas F. Bresee, A Prince in Israel" on page 26, states that Philips was a man of considerable standing and wealth, a prominent citizen and generally called "Governor". PPB probably grew up near Franklin, where Philips had property. The aunt, Ruth Hawkins, died soon after the adoption (taking in the child Phineas) in 1819. Phineas Philips remarried to a woman named Anna with two children, one of whom married and continued living in the old Philips home.

His brother, John J. Bresee, in a deposition for his Civil War benefits (see file JohnJBresee.jpg) dated 11 May 1887 mentions a younger brother, Phineas, living in Iowa in 1868. He also mentions a sister (Ruth) who married a man by the name of David Strain in So. Worcester, NY. Most of the family is also named.

Upon the discovery of the death certificate for his sister, Ruth Bresee Strain the youngest child in the family, we learned she was born 7 May 1815, died 27 June 1891, married David Strain on 18 Mar 1831 and resided in Worcester, Otsego County, NY. She was buried on the Roe Farm in South Worcester, NY. Ruth's death certificate lists Jeremiah Bresee as her father and Melinda Hawkins as her mother. From "A Hawkins Genealogy 1638-1939, Record of the Descendants of Robert Hawkins of Charlestown, MA" by Ralph Clymer Hawkins published 1939, found at Heritage Quest Online, page 248, we find that Melinda Hawkins' sister, Ruth Hawkins, married a Mr. Phillips. Ruth Hawkins died 30 July 1819 when Phineas Philiips Bresee would have been age 6. This must be the aunt that took him as a young child to raise, as discussed above.

The following is from the "The Biblical Period from Abraham to Ezra" by William Albright: Moses bore an Egyptian name only slightly altered in the speech of later Israel, such as Phinehas, Hophni and Merari, which were also common among his relatives.

1895 - Phineas Philips Bresee's death certified shows at date of death, 31 Oct. 1895, he was 82 years and 11 months old. Therefore, his birth was in November 1812.

1883 August 17th, left Council Bluffs, Iowa, by railroad box car with his son, Phineas F. Bresee, for an eight day trip to Los Angeles, California.

1870 census for E. Des Moines Ward 6, Polk Co., Iowa, shows a PP Bresee age 56 (born 1813) a farmer living with his wife, Susan age 56, son-in-law G.H. Cowley age 40, his wife Diantha Bresee age 33 and their son Fred Cowley age 10. PP Bresee's son, Phineas F. Bresee, is living near by.

1860 census: they should be in Iowa as of 1857 but cannot locate the family in the census.

1857 per Dr. Banks book page 57: P.P. Bresee purchased a farm out on the Iowa prairie in the spring of 1857, thereafter sold his property in Davenport. Later in that summer the family moved there.

1850 census: they should be still in Delware Co., New York, but cannot locate the family in the census.

1840 census for Franklin, Delaware Co., NY, shows a Phineas Bressee age 20-30 living with a female age 20-30 and a son age under 5 (this would be son Phineas F. Bresee) and a female age under 5 (this would be daughter Diantha Bresee). Living only three homes away is Phineas Philips and his family.

1834 land records shows Phineas P. Bresee of Franklin, NY, selling part of lot #20 of the Charlotte River patent, Delware Co., NY, on the north side of the Charlotte River to Henry TenEick of Davenport who's farm was next door (Henry TenEich may have married a Nancy Bresee). This land was previously owned and occupied by Jeremiah Bresee (had to be part of his inherence from his father Jeremiah Bresee) per Deed Book N page 147 film 557791. This evidence represents that Phineas Philips Bresee was the son of Jeremiah Bresee.

1833 land records shows Hawkins Bresee would receive his mother's (Malinda) one sixth interest in part of lot #20 upon her demise (Deed Book L page 596 Delware Co., NY, film 557790). In this deed his brother, John J. Bresee, was selling his interest in part of lot #20 of the Charlotte River patent on the north side of the Charlotte River. On the east side of the parcel was the land of David Bresee, his brother.

1830 census for Franklin, Delaware Co., NY, shows a Phineas Philips age 40-50. Living with his family was a male age 15-20 (this would be Phineas Philips Bresee age 18). Phineas Philips married Ruth Hawkins, Phineas Philips Bresee's aunt and this family raised him as a young child since they had no children of their own (see above).

1820 census for Franklin, Delaware Co., NY shows a Phineas Philips (PPB's foster father) living with others as follows: 1 male age 0-10 (this could be Phineas Philips Bresee age 7), 1 male age 10-16, 1 male age 16-18, 1 male age 16-26, 1 male age 26-45 (this could be Phineas Philips age 36), and 1 female age 16-26 (this could not have been Ruth Hawkins, his wife, who die 30 July 1819, at age 39).

1817 On March 31, 1817, the town of Davenport, Delaware Co., NY, was created from parts of the older towns of Kortright and Maryland, Otsego Co., NY. On April 8, 1817 the first town meeting was held.

1813-1818 was about the time period that Phineas Philips Bresee would have been taken in by Phineas Philips and his wife, Ruth Hawkins, based on PPB's birth date and Ruth Hawkins' death year.

1812 birth year based on grave stone in the Bresee plot at Evergreen Cemetery, Los Angeles, CA. The LDS records established by Duane Bresee, show Phineas P. Bresee, son of Jeremiah and Melinda Bresee, was born in Davenport, Delaware County, NY, in 1806, but the book "Prince in Israel" indicated he was born in 1813 in Schoharie County. (Schoharie is to the east of Delaware Co. and the town of Davenport was not formed until 1817.) In the book "Man of the Morning" by Donald Brickley on the life of Phineas F. Bresee, states that Phineas Philips Bresee was born in Schoharie Co., NY in 1813. Dr. Bangs' book shows the birth as 1813. Phineas Philips Bresee's death certified shows at date of death, 31 Oct. 1895, he was 82 years and 11 months old. That establishes November 1812 as his birth month and year.

1810 Census for Colchester, Delaware Co., NY, page 451 list Phineas Philips (10010-00011) with following members in household: one male age 10 or less; one male age 21-45 (could be Phineas Philips); one female age 21-45 (could be Ruth Hawkins age 29); and one female over age 46. This may be Phineas Bresee's future home after birth when taken in by his aunt, Ruth Hawkins, wife of Phineas Philips.

1808 Phinehas Philips (he was the husband of Ruth Hawkins and she was the daughter of Gaylord Hawkins) was a Plaintiff in the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas and received a judgment of $208 from Gaylord Haskins on 10 June 1808. This must have been his father-in-law, Gaylord Hawkins. Gaylord Hawkins also was the father of Melinda, wife of Jeremiah Bresee.
