"Mr Ebbott, senior, as before mentiond, was connected principal with Chewton. This brother was conspicuously successful in pioneering work. Wherever he went, he formed a new Methodist society, and God prospered his undertakings. He was a man who experience much worldly misfortune; once the bush-fires swept his farm, leaving him and family homeless; diease took his cattle, and continued ill-health added its distressing influence to his last days, but his faith in God never and he died in 1867, regretted, respected and beloved by all. His sons Philip and John, followed his example in their attachment to the Methodist cause, and the latter is now a leading mad in the Chewton congreation."

Chewton Anniversary - On Sabbath, Dec. 23rd, sermons were preached in the morning and evening by Mr. Thomas Pybus, and in the afternoon by the Rev. W. Furstman. On Tuesday, the school house was crowded with guests anxious to do justice to the wellspread tables, the suupply of creature comforts was of the most bountiful character. After tea, the company adjourned to the church, when the Rev E. King presided, and efficiently conducted the business of the meeting. Mr Hardy read the annual statement, which was a satisfactory one. Mr Boots, of Maldon, made many pleasing references to former times, to the evident pleassure of the meeting. The Rev. C. Duvourg gave a very characteristic speech. Mr Thomas Pybus riveted the meeting for an hour -- whilst he handled the charge made by some "that Christianity is a Failure". It was a masterly effort, interrupted by reapeated bursts of applause. Messrs Ebbott, Disbourg, Walker, G. Archbold, and P.Ebbott spoke to the votes of thanks. Durring the evening the choir gave several selections of music with great taste. Thbe meeting was excellent in spirit, throught truly a happy Christmas. We are about to add a vestry to our church, and a powerful Harmonium.
