census- August 1776 Frederick county, MD (later Montgomer co) shows the following on Phillip: Phillip Dowell (24) Prissiller Dowell (22) Bachelder (4) bn MD Elizabeth (3) bn MD Allay (1) bn MD 1790 Rowan Countyu Census 1fw male of 16 plus- Phillip 2 fw males under 16- John and Phillip 2 fw females wife Priscilla and Betsey 1800 Rowan County Census 1 male over 45 Phillip 1 female over 45 Priscillia 2 females 16-26 2 males 10-16 1 male under 10 2 females under 10 Between 1797-1803 Phillip and wife, Priscilla let Nathaniel Peebles have land in Rowan county...(reference McCubbins Papers) May 4, 1805 Rowan county- Phillip deeded 1 acre to Trustees of Baptist church (believed to be the Old Fork Church near Mocksville) Cannot be found in 1810 census however he lived in Wilkes county in 1810 or shortly thereafter. He bought land there from Charles L. Chrissman of Surrey County. There were two tracts totalling 445 acres on the North side of the Yadkin River and on Elkin Creek, bounded east by Surry County Line. 1814 sold his land, Rowan county 1820 Wilkes County Census 1 male over 45; 1 female over 45; 1 male 26-45; 1 female 26-45; 2 females 16-26 8 slaves Will dated Nov 1, 1823 - WB 4 pge 35 Probated Feb Term 1823 In the name of God amen, or be it remembered that I Phillip Dowell, Sr. of Wilkes co. being week in Body, but of sound and perfect mind and memory, or you may say this considering the uncertainitiy of this mortal life and being of sound memory blessed be almighty God for the same-- First, I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife, Prisilla Dowell, a negro wench by the name of Sincy, also a negro woman by the name of Lydia, also one by the name of Ginny, also another by the name of Catey, also one by the name of Timfrey to have and to hold during her lifetime, and after her decease my will is that Sincey is to go to my daughter, Betsy and the Heirs of her body. Ginny after my wife's death I will to my daughter, Nancy and the heirs of her body and after my wifes death I will Catey to my daughter, Becky W. Kenny and to the Heirs of her body. My will is that my wife is to live with son, Phillip at my Mansion House and also my Single Daughters and after my wife's death I will my daughter Alley Tucker a negro by the name of Lydia and to heirs of her body. Item: I give and bequeath to my son, Peter Dowell a boy by the name of Joe. ITEM: I give and bequeath to my son, Phillip Dowell, a negro man by the name of David, and also a boy by the name of Richman, also I will a Negro boy by the name of Henderson to my two sons, John and Peter to be equally divided between them. ITEM: I give and bequeath to my son, Phillip fifty acres of land where my mill now stands, my will is that my three daughters shall have a bro and furniture a fire and one a peace. ITEM: I give and bequeath to my daughter, Prisella Dowell, a negro girl by the name of Inda, and the heirs of her body. Also, I give and bequeath to my beloved wife, one black mare and colt. Also my will is that if my wife should marry that my daughters should then take the property that I have willed to my wife. I also Will to my two sons, John and Phillip my two entries one containing 45 acres and the other 50 acres. My Will is that all just debts be paid out of my accts and notes that I have on different people, and if there should be any remaining balance to be divided among the children. I also, appoint my two sons, Peter and Phillip, my Execturos to this my last will and Testament. I hereby revoke all former Wills by me made.
