There are many different variations on the spelling. I settled on "SPYRE" based on the spelling used for the transfer of land records. Other spellings are "SPIRE" "SPIER" "SPEYER" "SPYER"

Until 1995 we had his name as as "August". The Phillip name found in land transfer records by Louise Clamme. Phillip purchased a 40 acre farm which was located just east of the Bole's camp ground on Blackford County road 300 North just east of HW 3. The farm long ago was incorporated into other tracts. It is currently owned by LenaRuth Clamme. He apparently died around 1859 which is after the land was transfered and before the 1860 census. In the census only Elizabeth and the 2 children are listed. Elizabeth evidently died between 1861 when her father, Conrad Cale's will was executed and the indenture of the two girls in 1864. No burial has been located (as of 1997). The two prime possibilities are the Goghnauer Cemetery where many of the Cales are buried and the Hadden family cemetery which is about a half mile northwest of the farm they purchased.
