Peter and his younger brother Samuel moved with their parents to Richland County, Ohio in 1838 and learned the trade of tinsmithing.

Peter and his family moved from Ohio to Roanoake, Indiana in 1857; moved again in 1865 to a farm 3 miles north of Huntington, Indiana, in Clear Creek Township. They moved again in the spring of 1876 and became residents of Hungtinton, Indiana.
