    "421. PETER NORTON, (Ebenezer,3 Joseph,2 Nicholas1), b. Sept. 1718; res. E. (Major's Cove, Farm Neck). He was a prominent, public-spirited man, a leader in the political and social life of the county; sheriff for many years, deacon of the Baptist Church from its establishment and Major of the county militia. The house he lived in still stands and is shown in Vol. II, p. 40, Annals of Oak Bluffs. He m. Sarah Bassett (50) abt. 1740, who was b. 19 Mch. 1720 and d. 8 Sept. 1804.
