In Helene Mooty's book, THE DESCENDANTS AND ANCESTORS OF ANDREW WELLINGTON FINK & SUSAN HENRIETTA BEADLE, Helene quotes Charles Briggs who wrote to her about the Finks in Maquon. In a letter dated June 2, 1983, he says: "I don't know that I can get too deep into the relationships but these families are all related -- Fink --Ouderkirk --Jones--Barbero. All were marriages in New York State and the next generation in Ill. The first of my people to come to Maquon, was Joel Barns and wife Sally (Ouderkirk) early in 1835. Joel was a land speculator. He purchased land in Maquon Township, Section 5. Sally was the daughter of Fredrick Ouderkirk. Sally's brothers Peter Ouderkirk and Jacob Ouderkirk with their wives and children came in November, 1835, as well as Peter Jones. Joel sold part of his land to Jacobn Ouderkirk. Peter Ouderkirk also bought land. Peter Jones and Peter Ouderkirk built a log cabin on Section 5 where the 2 families spent the first winter. These 2 men's wives were twins, daughters of John Christian Fink -------Peter Ouderkirk married Elizabeth Fink --- Peter Jones married Caroline Fink. These people came to Maquon a year or so after the Indians were driven out and one year before the town was laid out in 1836."

From THE OUDERKIRK SAGA Compiled by: H. John Ouderkirk-1990 and online at BYU's Family History Archives. Pub by Ouderkerk Family Genealogical Assn, Marietta, GA 30077, April 2004. "The first winter in Maquon was a difficult one because the weather had already turnedcold in November and adequate shelter was hastily erected. Peter and Elizabeth Fink Ouderkirkhad come to Illinois with the family of her sister Caroline, and her husband, Peter Jones. The twofamilies built a log cabin and both families, numbering sixteen people, shared that cabin. Family legend tells us they all survived that winter with "nary a cross look between any of the family members". About twenty Ouderkirk Family and allied family members are buried in theOuderkirk Family Cememery. It is located ? mile west of Maquon. The first homes in the area were generally built of black walnut logs with the spaces between the logs chinked with clay both inside and out. Very soon the farm sites were surveyed, cabins built, seed planted and the main street of the town saw the first stores, blacksmith shops and livery stables open for business. Many more families came to Maquon, during the years that followed and by 1857, a total of 55 male votes were cast when the first village election was held."

Housh-Walter-Sumner Cemetery or Briggs Cemetery: The first known burial was in 1839 with the last being in 1914. It is located one and a half miles west of Maquon on County Highway 20 and down a lane one-half mile South on the Southern edge of the North East Quarter of Section 5 in Maquon Township. The land was patented September 23, 1838 by Peter Jones and John W. Walter. It measures 125 feet by 100 feet on a point, overlooking a wooded ravine on three sides, where three small streams come together with a field being on the North side. No mention is made of it in any deeds. It is currently owned by Harlan and Jean England. (from Todd Walter of Maquon)
