[edit] ObituarySUDDEN DEATH Penrose Herring One of the Pioneers of Allen County Dies at His Home in German Township. Penrose Herring died suddenly at his home yesterday at 11 o'clock a.m. He had been at Lima on Saturday and returned late in the evening. He ate a hearty supper and retired for the night. As he did not rise at the usual hour in the morning his wife asked him if he was sick. He replied in the negative and said that he desired to be left alone. At ten o'clock he arose and after dressing himself walked about the house apparently in search of something, possibly his pipe and tobacco. He appeared to be in a sullen mood, asked no questions and allowed no one to say anything to him. As he was subject to such spells, the family thought nothing strange of his action. After wandering about the house for a few minutes in this matter he sat down in a chair, dropped his head upon his breast then fell from the chair to the floor a corpse. The deceased was born and raised in German Township and was about 63 years old at the time of his death. Through his industry and economy he amassed a snug little fortune consisting of about seven hundred acres of choice land located principally on the west bank of Hog Creek between Allentown and Elida. He leaves a widow and eight children as follows: William, Mrs. John Red [Redd], Amos, George, Mrs. John Burget, Charles, James, Bertha and Samuel. He also leaves three brothers and four sisters as follows: Gideon, West Cairo, O.; Jacob, Rochester, Ind.; Rev. W. M., Leatherwood Pa.; Mrs. George Kisler, Elida, O.; Emaline, Springfield, O.; Eliza, Sidney, O.; and Anna, Evansville, O. The funeral will be held at Allentown M. E. Church on Wednesday at ten o'clock a. m. The remains will be interred in Greenlawn Cemetery. References
