1891 March 24, Troy, Iowa. Ada Tharp wrote her cousin Jane Love: "We recieved you welcomed letter last week. It found us all well. Except Uncle Sylvesters youngest child, / He suffered two weeks as much as any child could suffer, / He passed away to the b[e]tter world above. Sunday 15 minuits untill 12 Oclock. He was just 3 yrs 1/2 day old / It was so hard to give him up. He was always singing and so good natured, / 4 yrs ago the 6 of this Month they buried their little girl / they called her Leona. She was so smart to / it nearly killed them to give her up. And when their other baby came in the world, they loved him the more. And now he's gone. It makes seven children they have buried, four living. They lost the three oldest, Three girls and four boys. They have one girls and three boys left. The roads are so muddy, all most impossiable to get to the grave yard yesterday." Correspondence from the family letters and papers of Jane Love and her cousin, Lillice Jones Harper, courtesy John, Danny, and Dave Harper in 2001 and 2004, transcribed by Brenda Boyer
