He graduated from the Story City High School in 1935. He was awarded membership in the National Honorary Society. He worked for one year on his father's farm. He graduated from Iowa State College, Ames, Iowa, in 1941, general engineering, and entered the U.S. Naval Air Corps in June 1941. Enlisted in U. S. Naval Reserve, Feb 24, 1941 as Seaman 2nd class in Kansas City, Kansas. Accepted appointment as Aviation Cadet Sept 4, 1941. Completed training at Naval Air Station and reported for active duty as instructor at Jacksonville, Florida. Appointed to rank of Lieutenant (j.g.) March 1, 1943. Detached Naval Reserve Section Base, Norman, Oklahoma, as instructor and ordered to Seattle, Washington, for duty, involving flying in a Fighting Squadron. Died 5 Nov 1943 in a mid-air collision, vicinity of Smith Island, Washington. Cause of death drowning. Received World War II Victory Medal.
