He graduated from the Story City High School in 1930, and was a member of the National Honorary Society. He worked one year on his father's farm, and clerked at Woolworth's in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Des Moines, Iowa in 1931-32. He worked for Montgomery Ward's at Ames, Iowa, Columbus, Neb., Grand Island, Neb., and Ft. Dodge, Iowa, 1932 to 1941. From 1942 to 1949 he managed the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. stores in Marshalltown and Ottumwa, Iowa. In 1949 he returned to Story City to take over Donhowe Motor Company for his father. He was a member of the Story City Community Congress, Lion's Club, Trustee of St. Petri Lutheran Church, and on the Board of Regents of Luther College, Decorah, Iowa. From 1963 to 1969 he was President of Viking Egg Corporation.
